Illegal parking in Kirton 'puts schoolchildren at risk'

Commercial vehicles parking illegally in a public car park in Kirton could cause danger for schoolchildren, according to a councillor.

Kirton Parish Council chairman Ian Turner said the car park in Station Road is for the private car use and not commercial vehicles which seem to be parking there for various periods of time.

The parish council's car park restricts the use of any vehicle over seven and a half tonnes.

But commercial vehicles parking in the car park is becoming more of a regular occurrence, which is forcing parents picking up and dropping off their children school to park on double yellow lines and pavements.

He said: "It is the safety issues of commercial vehicles parking here that concerns us.

"They are taking up parking spaces which parents use at school time and parents are being forced to park on pavements and elsewhere in the village which could possibly become a dangerous situation involving a child.

"Commercial vehicles are parking there during the night with several staying there all day.

"It is clearly just the safety issue that concerns us, it is not an attack on commercial vehicles or their owners, but it is creating a hazard. Parents do not want to park on curbs or double yellow lines, but they have no choice as parking is limited and the commercial vehicles taking up spaces are not helping this problem."

There are signs asking both commercial and vehicles over 7.5 tons not to park in the car park, which is supposed to be for the use of people coming into the village to shop.

Kirton Parish Council looked into imposing a fine for commercial vehicles parking in the car park, but decided not to impose this.

The council is now looking at ideas for a deterrent, but ideas are at very early stages with no firm ideas in place as yet.

Adrian Tunnard of Kirton parks his van in the car park in the evening. He said: "No one really uses the car park at night.

"It is only left there after I finish work in the evening and then it is gone when I go to work.

"I don't think it is very fair as the car park is only full at school times and very quiet overnight. There is nowhere else to park the van. Would the council be happier if we left it elsewhere in the village? "
