Below is an article that appeared in Parking Review's September edition.

In a separate article in the same edition, Mr Nick Lester of London Councils and the BPA Ltd is quoted as saying "Research undertaken by London Councils by London Councils last year underlined that the cost of parking is not a key factor in the vitality of town centres.

Walsall charge cut doubles visits

The reduction in long-stay parking fees in Walsall town centre has resulted in an almost doubling of drivers parking in the council's car parks. The cut was announced in November 2012 as part of a drive to make the town more attractive.

The drop in long-stay parking fees from £5 to £3 has seen 18,241 tickets for all-day parking sold in the first six months of this year, compared with 9,475 in 2012 - an increase of 92%.

Two hours in short-stay car park now costs £1.40. All-day parking in long-stay car parks costs £3. District centre car parks are free. Council deputy leader, Adrian Andrew said: "There's no
question that this move has been a success and has been popular with motorists, shoppers and Walsall town centre businesses.

We have listened to what people have been telling us and we've reduced the cost of parking in
order to help our mission of creating and safeguarding jobs."
