In light of our stunning victory regarding the outlawing of cctv for parking, I thought I would pop out this afternoon to gauge the public perception of what had just happened.
I'm glad to say we appear to have come out of this in a very favourable light. ;D
I first popped down to my local pound in Enfield. No cars were present but an NSL chap took an interest in my appearance and came out to see what I was up to. I asked him what his views were regarding the government's announcement that they are going to ban the $cars (which are used only to enforce parking in Enfield), and he was either oblivious to the facts, or was in complete denial.
He was of the opinion that it was still open for debate and that nothing was yet set in stone. To some extent he is right because the bill has yet to receive royal assent, but he was definitely very twitchy about discussing it with me.
However, the most interesting thing about the whole exchange was that although he was confronted by a man in a V mask, on a motorbike, with a mohawk on his lid and wearing a hi vis with NoToMob written all over it, he was not phased in the least. What that tells me is that all NSL employees know exactly who we are and what we represent. It appears that the word is out about us and they have obviously been told not to mess with us. Oh dear! Was it something we said? :rotfl:
Rather than trawl round in Enfield trying to find an elusive $car that is always on the move, I thought I would try my luck at some of the well known honeypots in Waltham Forest. First port of call was Tufton Road and I wasn't disappointed. As I rode past the $car I couldn't help noticing that the driver's seat was at a very jaunty angle, within which was ensconced an obviously very tired CEO who appeared to be catching up with some sleep. Unfortunately, I was not able to capture this on camera because before I could capture the scene for posterity something obviously alerted him to my presence, because he shot off like a scalded rabbit.
I'm sure the driver thought that he could lose me, but he should have known better. I quickly caught up with him and there followed a very slow and leisurely tour of Chingford (never above 28mph). It appears that they have learned their lesson about driving properly when we are assisting them in achieving their target of 100% compliance without penalties. ;)
After about 15 minutes of humiliation, with me taking every opportunity to hold out my sign whenever we stopped, it was back to Tufton Road for some static $chunting. I am pleased to tell you that the word is obviously out, because I was approached by several members of the public who wholeheartedly praised us for getting the $cars banned. Car drivers were tooting their horns, giving the thumbs up and there were shouts of "well done" and "keep up the good work". I was getting that warm glow in my stomach again. ;D
After about 45 minutes I was then given the honour of escorting the $car back to the pound where I parked my bike directly opposite the windows of NSL's offices, from which so many NSL employees had in the past peered, gestured and made derisory comments about our parentage (amongst other things).
Guess what? After 10 minutes not one person had dared to even come for a look. <_> Was it something we said? :rotfl:
I left the $car I had followed back and went on a patrol of the other honeypots, but found nothing. I think the word was out and they had gone into hiding.
So with a warm glow still in my stomach, and with motorists still tooting and giving the thumbs up when seeing the mask and recognising us from the Parking Mad programmes, I made my way home where I am treating myself to a nice glass of beer whilst writing this.

Now we can concentrate on the bailiffs and the private parking sector, never forgetting of course that we will still have to $chunt the $camera cars and static cameras enforcing MTVs in London, and the bus lanes outside London that are producing far to many tickets.
