"When paying themselves huge salaries, council chiefs like to pretend they are running the equivalent of FTSE 100 companies. But they are not businesses: they are public authorities charged with the duty of carrying out certain functions for the public good — not to try to extract as much money from our pockets as possible.
When we buy services from private businesses, in most cases we have a choice. With our councils, however, we have no such choice.
Whatever ministers say about a ‘council tax freeze’, they are still treating us — disgracefully —– as cash cows to fund their fat salaries and pensions."
