City with the most double yellow lines/mile?
« on: 23 March, 2013, 02:58:31 PM »
I have been working in Exeter this week and I am genuinely shocked at the unbelievable levels of parking restrictions and simply miles upon miles of double yellow lines. I kid you not they extend to the slip road of the M5 and the Urban Clearways of the A38 and other trunk roads to the East and South and to the city limits to the North and West... Almost the entire city is covered by residents parking schemes and possibly 1% of bays are available for 2 hours of free parking (no return for 4 hours), this was of no use to me working in the prison from 8am till 4pm so I was forced to park in long term car parks at over £8 a day....

Shocking is just the start of it, there is a systematic approach to eradicating any parking that is not controlled and designed to rake in the cash!

I could have parked in the uni campus or halls as the signs there still show clamping but I didn't fancy the fight.

"...working in the prison..."? Go on. Pull the other one.

Didn't know they would let you serve your sentence in 8 hour increments nowadays. ;D

Well when I say working.... It takes the best part of two hours to clear security in the mornings with tool bag checks etc.. and nearly an hour to get out at the end of the day. Combine that with the fact it is a Victorian prison where the inmates that were hung were chucked in an unmarked communal grave, digging foundations in the yard is more than a little challenging... Add in the unstopping torrential rain and last week was less than fun!

As you're working there, does the Prison not provide Parking?

Probably only if you take the accommodation package which includes sharing a small room with huge tattooed gorilla called Nosher.  :o :o :o
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Beer in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up,  totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a  ride!!"

Appealing to the council is like playing chess with a pigeon. You might be a chess grand master but the pigeon will always knock all the pieces over, shit on the board and then strut around triumphantly.

Not a chance, we take one vehicle in each day with concrete and other requirements but you are not even supposed to take a bottle of water in!

Chatting to one of the escorts last week regarding smoking; it is a 'non-smoking site' so if you have a need you have to go out through security, off site and then back in through the full process!!! Anyway, this applies to staff and visitors but the prisoners can smoke anywhere they like, even in bed if they want! The madness of that???? If you live in rented accommodation you are not allowed to smoke in it by law or if you are a pensioner in a home.... I haven't smoked for 22 years but I could if I thought it would make a point about this bloody country!

The Prisoners are allowed to smoke because the Prison is regarded as their "Home" and it is assumed that they would allow themselves to smoke in their own home. For the Warders etc., it is their workplace and the Legislation bans smoking in the workplace - even Lorry Drivers are banned from smoking in their cabs (unless, of course, they own the truck)! But yes, I agree it's mad!
