Where was our invitation?
« on: 12 June, 2013, 01:14:25 PM »
from http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/10111470/Motorists-reluctant-to-challenge-parking-tickets.html

Appearing before the all-party Transport Select Committee, (I'm guessing from the date that this was on Monday of this week) Edmund King, the AA’s president, said in some case the motorists had fallen foul of the parking authorities because of confusing signage about restrictions. But even though they believed they had a valid case to take to independent adjudicators, motorists were throwing in the towel. Motorists in London can be fined up to £100, outside the capital the maximum penalty is £70. Drivers who pay within 14 days are entitled to a 50 per cent reduction. But should they take the case to an adjudicator, the time taken to settle the hearing, means drivers will be hit with the full fine.

“I think there is a need for clarity about signage,” Mr King told MPs. (My emphasis) “Motorists are worried they will lose the discount so they pay up. But they feel they have been penalised unfairly.”

In its evidence to the committee, the AA highlighted the issue of confusing signs which triggered many fines faced by confused motorists. The motoring organisation also feared drivers’ plight would worsen under Department for Transport plans to allow councils greater freedom.

“Despite numerous reviews and amendments to traffic sign regulations confusion over signs remains one of the biggest triggers of Penalty Charge Notice issue. “The AA is very concerned that the traffic signs review may lead to more local variation in parking signing,” MPs were told.

Whilst we agree with a simple straightforward menu of appropriate signs from DFT we are concerned that allowing greater local authority flexibility will lead to a general lack of consistency. “Even before ‘deregulation’ of traffic signing there were problems of authorities ‘going it alone’ with their own designs of parking signs.”

Do we have a PR person who might know how to get someone from our group in front of such a committee? Presented the right way, along with the fact that even when adjudicators find signage incorrect (and there was a short bit about this on the BBC TV News this morning) councils continue to impose penalties, the information we've collectively gathered might give rise to an appropriate review.

A Select Committee done in one day? Unheard of!

Maybe the documentary evidence you pt forward was so good they don't feel the need to ask you along to explain it.

Whats Kiera Fleck got to do with it? <_>
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Beer in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up,  totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a  ride!!"

Surely Pat you mean Anja Patel, the much loved and respected lady elected by those at the BPA Ltd's organisation as their patsy leader?
