Parking wardens to strike in Portsmouth in the run up to Christmas

PORTSMOUTH’S parking wardens plan to take industrial action on Monday because of a row over the way they work.

Workers will refuse to enforce all externally contracted off street pay and display car parks and won’t remove, lower or raise bollards and barriers.

They’ll use notepads instead of electronic handheld equipment to issue parking fines because they track how many they issue and feel they’re being judged on their progress.

The dispute also centres on the current job evaluation procedure and what they claim are unsuitable changing facilities.

The traffic wardens voted by an 80 per cent margin to take action.

Talks with management at Portsmouth City Council are due to take place on Friday.

The trade union Unite, the country’s largest union representing the wardens, has called for the council to enter into constructive talks in the hope a fair settlement will be reached.

Ian Woodland, Unite’s regional officer, said: ‘As services provided by the council have reduced because of the government’s swinging local government financial cutbacks, our members in parking enforcement have taken on a number of additional duties.

‘All they ask is they are fairly compensated for this.

‘Currently, the council’s job evaluation process has failed to give our members confidence that these additional duties are being properly and fairly considered.’
