Transport minister urges private parking companies to ‘act responsibly’

Scotland’s Transport minister has ordered private parking companies to “act responsibly” following our investigation into fines handed out to motorists.

Keith Brown praised our probe and highlighted a poll from our website showing that 89% of respondents think the industry in Scotland treats drivers unfairly.

He said: “The Courier’s poll shows that many people are concerned about private parking companies and how fairly motorists are treated. It is up to private companies to decide how to lawfully manage their off-street parking — but clearly all companies have a responsibility to operate within the law, and they should act responsibly at all times.”

Meanwhile, The Courier’s investigation has also been hailed by industry experts, including UK parking law guru, Barrie Segal, founder of website www.AppealNow.com.

He said the coverage had put the Scottish scene under the spotlight for the first time.

He added: “The Courier really must be commended for their work and I’m glad somebody has finally taken it on.”

Scottish Liberal Democrat leader, Willie Rennie, said: “This poll shows that people in Courier Country have had enough of unscrupulous private parking providers. It’s clear that the rules need to be made more transparent so that customers and private parking firms know where they stand.”
