Panorama - Don't Take My Car: Bailiffs Undercover

An investigation into the bailiffs who chase up unpaid parking tickets for local authorities, seizing cars and demanding huge fees in what has become a multimillion-pound business. They say they perform a public service, but Panorama investigates claims that some bailiffs are intimidating motorists, exaggerating their powers and pumping up fees. As councils report increasing revenues from penalty fines, John Sweeney asks whether new laws to curb the bailiffs' worst excesses go far enough.

Reporter John Sweeney
Editor Tom Giles

I watched this last night and can honestly say that what I saw on there was outrageous!

There was a case where bailiffs "seized" £30,000 worth of cars including a veterinary ambulance and the wife's car of the voluntary vet who owned the ambulance..  This is something that bailiffs are not legally entitled to do as first, the ambulance is a tool of trade which prohibits seizure and the wife's car had nothing to do with the chap who owned the ambulance.

I would have the bailiffs up in court for a big time suing and believe me, I would sue them for a whole load of money.  Something in the region of £200,000 to teach them a lesson and make them buck up thier ideas.  The courts don't look to kindly on illegal acts like this and come down hard on the offenders. What they did was tantamount to theft and robbery, and these ARE criminal offences, punishable by up to 6 months in prison and an unlimited fine or both... EACH.

I find it interesting that the police allowed them to do it when they should have known that it was illegal.

Makes me sick!
It's not "enforcement", it's "extortionate"!

The man with the vet van should have asked for help before the bailiff called.

New fees start 6 April. We have yet to fully learn what this will mean.
