Frimley hospital to levy unlawful "fines" on its staff

Rising parking fees are 'final straw' for Frimley Park Hospital staff

Frimley Park Hospital staff are currently charged between £11 and £20 per month to park

Rising costs for Frimley Park Hospital staff wanting to park their cars at work have come under fire.

A hospital employee said that the increased parking charges, with no increment in pay, was making life difficult for them and their colleagues.

The employee, who asked to remain anonymous, also spoke of being sent ‘threatening’ warning letters about the consequences of not adhering to the new rules.

Frimley Park Hospital staff are currently charged between £11 and £20 per month to park, depending on the staff grade and whether they work full or part-time.

Prior to September 1, these charges ranged from £10 to £17.

A spokesman for the hospital said: “We feel the rates are still reasonable.

“We have invested £3 million in parking. If we did not increase parking prices, it would come out of patient services and that would not be right thing to do.”

The spokesman added there had been real issues with parking on site, resulting in some employees being blocked in and instances of dangerous parking or parking in yellow hatched areas.

“It is imperative that these areas are kept clear so that emergency vehicles such as fire engines can access the numerous on-site offices and residences and so pedestrians, including users of our on-site day nursery, are kept safe,” the spokesman said.

The hospital introduced a system of warnings and fines to alleviate these problems, with letters sent out to all employees outlining the rules.

Staff members are issued with a warning ticket or letter for the first offence, a fine of £10 for the second offence, a fine of £35 for the third offence and a trust-wide parking ban for the fourth.

The monetary fines increase and are deducted from staff salaries if they are not paid within 14 days.

The anonymous employee said: “The threat of automatic salary deductions is the final straw for many of us, particularly those regularly on shift work where they pay for a space that isn’t there.

“Loyal health professionals are facing further costs to their ever-dwindling pay packet in real terms.”

The Frimley Park spokesman said the decision to implement increased charges and changes to the parking system only came about after an extensive staff consultation to discuss what the best solution would be for the parking issue at the hospital.

The general consensus was in support of a system of warnings and fines that discourage staff from parking dangerously and inconsiderately.

The spokesman added: “We were not aware of anyone raising this internally.

“Not everybody is going to be happy but it is difficult pleasing everybody all the time, as everybody has different points of view on this.”

Leaving aside the issue of whether or not staff should pay for parking at all, I thought it was actually Illeagal to deduct anything (except Tax, NI and Court Ordered payments) from Salary without the employee's written consent.

Perhaps someone SHOULD be raising your point internally Dick, along with questioning the rights of an employer to impose fines on its employees? <bashy2> :bashy: <bashy2> :bashy:

I have to say that I'm surprised the relevant union(s) haven't raised both these points.
