Mini traffic wardens on the case in Burpham

Schoolchildren become traffic wardens for the day with help from Surrey Police and Surrey County Council

Children at Burpham Primary School became mini traffic wardens for the day by taking part in a new ‘park smart’ initiative.

Pupils in Years 2, 3 and 5 were supported by Surrey Police and Surrey County Council to help reduce the amount of congestion and inconsiderate parking near their school.

Accompanied by PC Matt Redfern and Sarah Akerman of the county council, the pupils patrolled the road outside their school just before home time on Thursday (April 30).

They spoke to motorists to encourage safer behaviour and issued six special park smart tickets, which highlighted their areas of concern. More than 150 information leaflets were given to pedestrians.

Jo White, headteacher, said: “The park smart initiative is already having an impact on the number of car drivers parked around the school and is especially effective because the children are involved. We will continue to work closely with parents and members of the community to make the roads around our school even safer.”

Pupil Jack, said: “It’s for the community. Maybe they don’t know they’re doing it wrong until we tell them.”

Fellow pupil Katie, said: “If the parents leave their cars in the park and walk, it makes it safer near our school.”

Perhaps this headmistress should have taken a leaf out of Burpham's book before squandering her school's budget on a service that's already paid for by local taxpayers.

School uses £1.2k of its budget to stop illegally parking parents

A school has used its education budget to employ its own traffic wardens and target parents parking illegally, The Sentinel reports.

Headteacher Lisa Sarikaya hired the traffic wardens for a month after fearing one of her pupils could be knocked down.

It followed complaints about vehicles parked on double-yellow lines and blocking residents' drives near Belgrave St. Bartholomew Academy, in Stoke-on-Trent.

But Mrs Sarikaya has warned she cannot keep using the school's cash to pay for the council traffic wardens and urged parents to park more responsibly.

She used around £1,200 to employ two wardens for one-and-a-half hours at school pick-up and drop-off times for four weeks.

It comes as new figures show Stoke-on-Trent City Council traffic wardens have handed out 426 fines for illegal parking outside Potteries schools.

Mrs Sarikaya said: "We need to prioritise the education of the children. I have to weigh up spending money to keep our children safe or spending money on their education."

  • Veni, Vidi, $chunti. I came, I saw, I assisted.
Sample exam question:

A headteacher spends £1,200 of education funding over a four week period. If two parking weasels work one and a half hours each for five days of each of the four weeks, how much extra money has this thick bitch squandered in other non educational ventures?
(The sums involved might be quite large so calculators are allowed for working out)

Appealing to the council is like playing chess with a pigeon. You might be a chess grand master but the pigeon will always knock all the pieces over, shit on the board and then strut around triumphantly.

Isn't that called "grooming"?

Possibly. But if kids are "groomed" into becoming responsible adults I don't have a problem with that. It's the irresponsible adults who are the current problem and it is they who need educating. Fining them obviously doesn't work. Pester power is far more effective.

Or were you just being funny?  ;D

Humour.

Every weasel has to start somewhere.
