Rogue parking firms are 'hitting motorists with ridiculous fines'

Paula Sherriff backs new code of conduct amid constituents' complaints about private firms' harsh fines

Motorists in Kirklees are being caught out with "ridiculous" parking fines by "unscrupulous" private firms.

That's the claim of Labour MP, Paula Sherriff, who has called on the government to crack down on the "dubious practices" and "harsh fines" hitting constituents.

Miss Sherriff raised her concerns in Parliament after being contacted by a number of people who were unwittingly caught out.

She said they told her of "questionable practices" including; signs that are hard to read, fines issued for entering a car park for a few seconds, fines for mis-keying one digit of the car registration number, parking notices which mimic a police ticket or court document, and threats to use bailiffs to repossess cars.

ExaminerLive is frequently contacted by people who have been caught out by parking operators at various retail parks across the borough.

Most use a so-called ANPR camera system that records vehicles coming in and out, using their registration plate to identify the vehicle.  If you stay longer than allowed it automatically issues a fine.

But many have claimed there are flaws in the systems, especially if people drive out of a different exit, such as at Leeds Road Retail Park.

Miss Sherriff raised the issue with the Leader of the House of Commons and asked for a debate on how to “tighten up legislation so that these robbers, who often prey on the most vulnerable in society, can no longer impose such ridiculous fines?”

The Minister said she was sympathetic and had challenged similar charges on behalf of her constituents.

Miss Sherriff, MP for Dewsbury, Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton added: "Unscrupulous private car parks are making a quick profit out of local people.

"It is wrong that drivers are being put through mental anguish due to the shocking practices of these rogue companies.

"There has long been concern at the sharp practices used by private parking companies, and my constituency staff and I do all we can to help local people who tell me they have been wrongly charged.

"To really put a stop to this, we need to be sure that any new legislation prevents companies exploiting parking law loopholes, with clear and transparent rules made mandatory to ensure people are treated fairly and consistently.

"Extortionate fines, poor signage, unreasonable terms and aggressive demands for payment are indefensible and should to be outlawed once and for all.

"There is a Private Members Bill currently passing through parliament that would introduce a code of practice for private car parks.

"The Bill has gained widespread support, but the effectiveness of this legislation will depend on the toughness of the code itself and how it is enforced."
